What we investigate

Our research focus is on visual classification and segmentation of digital photographs. We construct decision support systems for physicians to improve the therapeutic management of dermatology patients.

Our research in more detail

Visual morphology of the epidermis and its underlying structures is the most important clinical feature used by dermatologists to diagnose disease or age-related changes, decide on treatments, surgery and other interventions, and predict the development of pathologic conditions. Even though enormous efforts have been put in molecular research of skin, the visual features have been addressed very little due to lack of suitable techniques. With the advent of machine learning, this has changed and we are now able to identify features of disease, measure the area involved by pathologic changes and pinpoint the exact location on the body based on a coin-sized skin patch. We will contribute to SKINTEGRITY.CH with clinical meta-data that can add value to otherwise little described biopsy samples used in laboratory studies.
